Pyramid Song by Radiohead.
The problem with the album Amnesiac is that it opens up with this song. Pyramid Song is brilliant, it’s the big, dark, fucking fantastic fade out after an earth-shattering climax, much akin to Videotape from OK Computer and the aptly-named Street Spirit (Fade Out) from The Bends.
(tl;dr: Radiohead is good at concluding albums.)
What results is the remainder of the album (i.e. about 80% of it) being an overlong conclusion to a build-up that never existed to begin with. And that’s a shame, because otherwise it’s a great tracklist.
So that’s why I’m putting this song up - it’s still one of my favourite Radiohead songs but it’s also an important lesson to any musician. Structure in music is even more important than the music itself. Without it your entire body of work, no matter how strong the material, just crumbles around it.
